Flying and bags overhead: a recipe for many an injury
Traveling this holiday season? Believe it or not, how you use the overhead space on a plane is essential to maximizing time with loved ones. There are so many ways that putting a bag overhead can lead to an injury which can ruin holiday plans.
Here are a few reminders of how to keep yourself safe:
- Pack Light: Fewer shoes, less heavy electronics and carefully selected coordinated clothing make for an easier time lifting and maneuvering your bag. I, myself, prefer to carry a backpack. It’s easier to stow and go.
- Watch Body Mechanics: Use two hands, and keep some space to use momentum while transitioning your bag up. Once the bag is inside the overhead space, square yourself and, again, use two hands to push it in.
- Remember Gravity: When removing your bag, gravity takes over. Guide the bag down and let the floor be the brakes; your wrist, elbow and shoulder will be thankful. I recently observed a master in action.
- Watch Out for Others! Yes, you have your bag under control. Not everyone else does. Watch for falling bags, or stuff falling out of them. Head injuries are one of the most common plane related injuries. (Yes, we can help with those!)
- Do Good Deeds: Being the conscientious person you are, help a fellow traveler out. The end goal is for everyone to arrive safely to enjoy this special time of year.
